Mercedez-Benz new plant in North America

Recently o few automakers were expressing their interest in building auto manufacturing plants in North America for assembling or manufacturing their luxury segment cars, first because of to the strength of the U.S. luxury segment and second for its proximity to emerging South American markets. The demand for luxury vehicles continues to surge in many markets across the globe.

As I mentioned in an article before one of this is Audi and now Mercedes-Benz is looking to build new plant in either Mexico or the U.S.

An interesting fact is that last year, Audi overtook Mercedes-Benz as the world’s second-largest luxury car maker by sales volume. This is practically explained first by its large presence in the Chinese market and second by maintaining large sales volume in the U.S. and Europe.

The Chinese dynamic market motivates Mercedes-Benz to consider building a new plant in China to penetrate it. With this new plant and with the other that more likely will be installed in Mexico, might double their sales and reach the number of 2.7 million annual sales by 2020.  That’s the global sales vision for the brand, aiming to be the world’s Number One luxury automaker according to the Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche.

A few auto reports indicates that the plant will be built in Aguascalientes, Mexico – next to a Nissan assembly plant that already operates as a Mexico Manufacturing Company. There are speculations that would be a joint-venture with Nissan to build the next-generation A Class and a new small model for Infiniti from 2017 or 2018 onwards.

Mexico is one of the top 10 manufacturers of cars in the world, so with this experience many others auto manufacturers are expressing their intention of opening new production plants in Mexico. Even when it’s not about manufacturing their luxury segment cars, other companies are in the process of building new auto plants in Mexico such as Honda and Mazda. The Honda plant will open in 2014 and will be located near Celaya and employ over 3,000 workers in the area, with a production for this plant of around 200,000 units annually. The Mazda auto plant will manufacture small cars including the Mazda2 and Mazda3, mostly for their distribution into Brazilian market.

Welch Allyn, Tijuana manufacturing facility expansion

Welch Allyn[1], one of the biggest medical companies in Tijuana, part of the Baja California medical cluster, announced an expansion for this year. This consists on an investment of US$7.4 million in 2012, for production growth.

Welch Allyn, is a global manufacturer of frontline medical products and solutions, more specifically manufactures medical diagnostic devices, as well as patient monitoring systems and vital signs devices.[2]

The Welch Allyn, Mexico Manufacturing Company is manufacturing thermometers, estimating to achieve 10% growth of the actual production with this new investment and generate 75 new specialized jobs.

The company has distribution, sales, and manufacturing facilities all across the globe, and employs over 2,600 people, with only 730 employees at the manufacturing plant in Tijuana.

In 2011 the institution Gestion de Negocios selected Welch Allyn, for the third time consecutive “The Best Companies to Work For” in Mexico, even when this company opened its operation only five years ago.

Last year the company was ranked number 38 in Mexico, based on the responses of its employee.

International Year of Sustainable Energy all over the World

Last year United United Nations established that 2012 will be the International Year for Sustainable Energy for All. This year initiative is part of UN goal of universal energy access by 2030, a long term goal that is dedicated to ending energy poverty and achieving universal energy access by 2030.

To achieve this goal a proposition that was made to all governments is to look for invest in the intellectual capital that will create new, green technologies, by  increasing private and public spending on research and development, and the most important all Governments should facilitate this green technologies by creating specific incentives to reach that.

To accomplish this goal the United Nations also established a budget of 700 billion dollars for the next 20 years, but most important is the participation of all nations’ governments and multinationals companies that are establishing their production base all over the world (for example in Mexico are Mexico Manufacturing Company, etc.)

Also for reaching this United Nations is looking to establish strategic partnership with International Renewable Energy Agencies.

Even when United Nations isn’t an organism that can decide over the initiatives of all countries, to actually expect that all nations will make the same effort, it is important its role since 1959, when UN has implemented the concept of ‘International Years” to draw attention to major issues that are of global importance.

So, by that, this year initiative has its purpose to be a year of reflections and initiatives on energy issues at the local, national, regional and international levels.
